For months, my girls have been obsessed with smoothies. My kitchen has been overtaken by blenders, frozen fruit and yogurt. While it makes a huge mess and means I have kids milling about my kitchen and noisy machines going at all hours, it also means they are eating something healthy, which makes me happy!

Here’s the thing about fruit smoothies: I thought I didn’t like them. After all, I like to crunch my food; I’m not a yogurt and ice cream type of person. If I’m going to eat yogurt, I like it loaded with crunchy chopped-up fruit and granola. In truth, I am more of a salty girl altogether. I reach for chips and popcorn a lot faster than ice cream or chocolate.

But seeing my girls make smoothie after smoothie, I grabbed a spoon and tasted it one day. Hmm, I thought, it’s good. And since then, every day, when they made their smoothies, I would sneak more and more, until my daughter said to me, “Ma! Can’t you make your own?!” “Me?” I answered innocently. “Nah, I’m not a smoothie person.” She looked at me and said, “Well, with the amount that you keep ‘tasting’ of ours, that may have changed!” Huh? Me? Who would have thought? Then I went and made my own fruit smoothie, ate it for breakfast, and enjoyed every sip of it!

I know it’s not really a big deal — I mean, who cares if I like or don’t like smoothies? But to me this is monumental! Because I never ate smoothies before, every magazine recipe, every cookbook and social media post that had to do with smoothies, I skipped. Now I feel like there’s so much I’ve been missing for all these years…

I like to keep my smoothies simple. I look for flavor, something filling that doesn’t overload on the calories.

I look for a yogurt that has lots of protein, such as the Greek blends, and I usually use vanilla flavor, because that goes well with any fruit, but you can really use any flavor you’d like.

You can also use any fruit or fruit combinations. I love strawberry and banana. That’s it. Like I said, I like to keep it very simple. One of my girls likes putting in mango, and I have a niece who doesn’t like banana, so she adds pineapple instead. All of these options come out delicious.

I know a lot of people add protein powder to their smoothies. I’ve never tried that, but it’s certainly an option!

I use my Ninja blender to make my smoothies, which is really the best blender out there at a decent price point, but you can use any blender, it just may take a little longer to blend all the fruit.

And while you’re in the refreshing summer drink mode, try my copycat passion iced tea. It’s a great pick-me-up for a hot summer afternoon!

Basic Blended Yogurt and Fruit Smoothie

A delicious and refreshing summertime treat!
Print Recipe

Ingredients

  • 10 oz. Greek yogurt (I use vanilla, but you can use any flavor)
  • 5 frozen strawberries (approx.) or fruit of your choice
  • ½-¾ frozen banana*

Instructions

  • Place all ingredients into blender. Blend until smooth.
  • Pour into a smoothie cup and serve immediately.

Notes

*You can also use a banana that’s not frozen, but the smoothie will be a little less creamy.
You can add or substitute any of your favorite fruit — mango, blueberries, kiwi, pineapple… The exact measurements really don’t matter. More or less will alter the texture of the smoothie, but it will still be delicious.
