These fun little jalapeño cheese pinwheels are the perfect savory finger food. They will steal the show at your Shavuos kiddush and are also great as a Shavuos appetizer or side!

On Shavuos, while we don’t have a milchig meal, we do have a milchig kiddush before the meal. If you’d expect to see the classic cheesecakes and blintzes at our kiddush, you’d be disappointed! I don’t even bake cheesecake — I think last year I bought a small piece just to be “yotzei,” because how could I not? — but I’m not going to bother making a whole cheesecake that not enough people will eat. My family actually prefers savory cheese dishes, so every year I make less sweet stuff and more savory.

These jalapeno cheese pinwheels are a staple! Besides being easy to make, they can be made in advance, freeze well and look beautiful.

sauteeing jalopenos and onions

If you don’t like spicy but still want to make these, you can use mushrooms instead of jalapenos. You can also try them with chopped broccoli, roasted peppers… really any vegetable that suits your family’s taste. You can even double the onion and just use that!

spreading jalopenos over the dough

I personally like to use Pepperidge Farm puff pastry. It’s sold in all the major grocery stores and easy to work with, and I like the taste. But you can use any brand dough that you like.

When making these, roll out the sheet of dough to stretch it out a bit. It gives you more pinwheels and they’re nicer when the dough is thinner.

When making any baked good with puff pastry, a good-quality, REAL baking sheet makes a huge difference. I love these baking sheets — I promise this is not just me trying to convince you to buy stuff. I used to think it was just one more thing to wash and store, but then, years ago, I was cooking for a client and made a ton of mini deli rolls. I ended up using some disposable baking sheets and some real ones and, wow, what a difference! The deli rolls on the real sheets baked a lot more evenly. The ones on the disposables burned on the bottom and were not well done on top. I was shocked!

It’s not necessary to egg wash these jalapeno pinwheels. While they’re baking, the jalapeno and cheese will ooze out of the puff pastry and they will look delicious!

After these cool, you can place them in a container or 9×13 pan and freeze them.

I like to serve them either at room temp or warm.

If you love puff pastry as much as I do, my salmon knishes can also be a great addition to a Shavuos meal!

Ingredients

  • 2 tbsp oil
  • 1 small onion, diced
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 5-8 jalapeños, sliced
  • 2 cups shredded cheese
  • 1 sheet puff pastry

Instructions

  • In a medium frying pan, heat oil over a medium flame and add onion and garlic. Sauté until slightly brown, 8-10 minutes. Add the jalapeño and sauté for an additional 5 minutes or until cooked through.
  • Remove from fire and allow to cool.
  • Preheat oven to 400℉.
  • Roll out puff pastry sheet and spread jalapeño mixture over it. Sprinkle cheese on top.
  • Roll up tightly the long way, jelly-roll style. Use a sharp knife to slice into 1-inch pieces. Place pinwheels flat on a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper.
  • Bake for 20 minutes, until cheese is melted and dough is golden.

Notes

If you’re worried that the jalapenos will be too spicy for your family, you can skip them and use any other sauteed vegetable that you’d like — mushrooms, eggplant, zucchini, peppers etc.
Freezes well.
