Deli Puff Pastry Squares

Deli and puff pastry are always a delicious combo! Enjoy these little deli puff pastry squares at your next buffet-style seudah or sit-down meal!

deli puff pastry squares

These were originally pastry squares topped with little slices of fruit and drizzled with honey, but I’m always looking for foods that are Shabbos friendly and kid friendly. I decided to make these squares “deli style” instead, and I cannot tell you how fast I had to put them in the freezer when I tested them, as my husband and kids kept needing to “try” one more. These are also great served at a Purim seudah, as they are great finger foods if you are doing a buffet of kid friendly, fun options and can be eaten hot or at room temp.

sauce for deli puff pastry squares

These deli puff pastry squares are made with an interesting method — they’re baked upside down! First you put dollops of sauce on the pan, as shown. For the sauce, you can use any combination of sauces that you want. We love the flavor of mustard, but beware that mustard doesn’t dissolve so nicely as it melts, even though it tastes really good. When I’m just making these for my family, I’ll use a combination of duck sauce and mustard; otherwise, I often leave the mustard out.

You can also mix these up by doing half and half. Some members of my family love spicy foods and some don’t, so I’ll do some with a sriracha-mayo and some with a honey, mustard, and ketchup combo as shown here. There’s no right or wrong; ou just need something to use as “glue” to attach the deli to the puff pastry. You can even use plain honey if you want a sweet taste or bbq sauce for smoky flavor.

stacks of deli

After layering some deli on top of your desired sauce. Add a drop more sauce (here I just used a little honey).

Cover each sauce/deli stack with a puff pastry rectangle and press down the edges to seal around the filling. Bake and then flip over for a fantastic side or appetizer!

Ingredients

  • 1 package puff pastry squares (I like the Mazor brand), thawed

Sauce of your choice (use any or all):

  • ½ cup duck sauce (approx.)
  • ½ cup mayonnaise (approx.)
  • ¼ cup mustard (approx.)
  • 3 Tbsp sriracha sauce (approx.)
  • 2 6-oz. packages long deli (any kind — I used pastrami and smoked turkey), cut into pieces
  • 1 egg, beaten

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350°F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  • Cut each puff pastry square in half. (I find it easiest to use a kitchen scissors for this.) Slightly stretch the pastry so each rectangle is a bit wider.
  • Place dollops of sauce of your choice (either one type or a combination) on the parchment paper (as pictured in post).
  • Place a few pieces of deli over the sauce. Spread on a little more sauce.
  • Place a rectangle of puff pastry on top and press down to seal the sides.
  • Pierce each pastry rectangle with a fork a few times. Brush with beaten egg.
  • Bake for 20 minutes.
